A fubako is the box a letter travels in. This one is Japanese cedar with two chrysanthemums built up on the lid in gofun relief and an orange cord tied across it, made by a certified traditional craftsman. It opens, and it is the right size for the things that gather on a dresser: rings, cufflinks, a folded note.
In Japan it belongs to the Chrysanthemum Festival on September 9, when households set out their finest small objects and, in some families, bring the hina dolls out for a second, autumn showing. Wood darkens gently with age; every piece has its own grain.
