Two of the oldest objects in a Japanese bride's trousseau, at doll-house scale. The kaioke is the bucket that held the clam shells for the shell-matching game; the fubako is the box for letters. Here they are 1.5 inches tall, in Japanese cedar with chrysanthemums built up in gofun relief and tied with orange cord, made by a certified traditional craftsman.
They are ornaments, not containers: at this size the lids do not open. Set them on a shelf, beside the clam box, or on the gozen stand, and they carry the whole Chrysanthemum Festival in a few inches.
