The large version of the chrysanthemum clam box: a natural clam shell about 8 cm across, its two halves built up with white chrysanthemums in gofun relief and tied with an orange silk cord. Made by a certified traditional craftsman for the Chrysanthemum Festival, when Japan brings out its most refined objects and sets them where the household can see them.
Use it as an incense box, which is what a kōgō is for, or as the one object on a console table that people ask about. The clam stands for a lasting marriage: only its own two halves fit. Each shell is natural, so size and shape vary.
