The reason behind this piece
Where it comes from. Kutani, in Ishikawa on the Sea of Japan coast, known for 350 years for overglaze color — the gosai, five colors of red, yellow, green, purple and deep blue, painted thickly on white porcelain.
How it is made. The outline and colors are painted over the glaze and fired a second time at low temperature; the yellow chrysanthemums and red plum sit slightly proud of the surface and you can feel them. Unlike gold-decorated pieces, this one goes in the dishwasher and the microwave.
Why this pattern. Plum blooms in the snow before anything else — it stands for perseverance and the first good news of the year. Chrysanthemum is the flower of long life. Together they are the shorthand for “good fortune” on a Japanese table, which is why they appear at New Year and at birthdays.
How it is used in Japan. 3.7 inches: a mamezara, the “bean plate”, for soy sauce, pickles, a single sweet with tea. Japanese tables use many small plates instead of one large one.
On your table. Soy sauce for sushi, olives, a lemon wedge, a ring at the sink, a single chocolate on a coffee tray. The cheapest way to make a table look Japanese. Pair with the matching sake cup.
