A rabbit in blue underglaze, framed by red overglaze flowers, on clean Hasami white porcelain. At 6.5 inches this is the plate you reach for every day: a side plate, a dessert plate, a plate for sashimi or tempura. The low rim keeps a little sauce where it belongs.
Made for the harvest moon table, and at home on any other night.

The reason behind this piece
Where it comes from. Hasami porcelain, thin and white, from the town that has made Japan's everyday plates since the 1600s.
How it is made. Two techniques on one plate: the rabbit and outlines in cobalt blue under the glaze, then red and colored flowers painted over the glaze and fired again — the combination the Japanese call some-nishiki, “dyed brocade”. Because the color is fired hard, this plate is dishwasher and microwave safe.
Why this pattern. The rabbit is the animal of the moon and of luck: it only moves forward and it leaps. Surrounded by flowers, it is the image of the autumn moon-viewing, when Japanese families set out rice dumplings and pampas grass and watch the moon rise.
How it is used in Japan. 6.5 inches is a chūzara, the plate for one person's portion of a main dish, or for a slice of cake. It is the size people use most.
On your table. A side plate, a dessert plate, a plate for toast. Not too precious to use on a Tuesday.
