A hexagonal serving bowl in glossy vermilion with a gold rim and a chrysanthemum at its center, made for FOURGRACE in Fukui, the home of Echizen lacquerware. The hexagon is the tortoise-shell shape, a Japanese emblem of long life; the chrysanthemum is the flower of September. Together they are the table for the Chrysanthemum Festival and, three months later, for New Year.
About 9 inches across and nearly 2 inches deep: appetizers for a table, sushi, fruit, or the sweets after dinner. Modern resin lacquerware, so it is light, will not chip, and can be washed by hand without worry. Not for the dishwasher or microwave.

A piece with a quiet presence and a lovely touch of brightness. I wanted to set a pretty table for the Chrysanthemum Festival this year, and I fell for this at first sight. The red is really beautiful.
