Two white porcelain sake cups from Mino, each with a tiny sculpted rabbit sitting at the bottom. Pour cold sake and the rabbit surfaces through the drink, the way the moon rabbit appears in the water on a September night. Empty, they are plain white cups; full, they are a small piece of theater.
They hold about 80 ml (2.7 oz), which also makes them good for espresso, Chinese tea, or a shot of anything. Comes as a pair.

The reason behind this piece
Where it comes from. Mino, in Gifu, the largest pottery region in Japan and the home of Oribe, Shino and most of the everyday porcelain in Japanese kitchens.
How it is made. White porcelain, with a tiny rabbit sitting at the bottom of each cup. Empty, you see a small white figure; filled, the rabbit appears to float up through the sake.
Why this shape. In Japan the moon does not have a face; it has a rabbit, pounding rice cakes. On the night of the harvest moon people drink sake outdoors and look for the rabbit reflected in the cup. These cups put it there.
How it is used in Japan. For cold or chilled sake, in pairs, because sake is poured for someone else and never for yourself.
