A Hasami plate in the Old Imari manner: petal-shaped panels of chrysanthemum brocade alternating with blue wave and diamond patterns, the gold laid on by hand. About 6.3 inches, the size the Japanese call a torizara, the plate each person takes food onto from the shared dishes. It is the plate for New Year and for any evening that deserves some gold.
Cookies and small cakes look unreasonably good on it. Hand wash; the gold does not go in the dishwasher or the microwave.

The reason behind this piece
Where it comes from. Hasami, in the Old Imari manner: cobalt blue under the glaze, gold laid on over it.
How it is made. The blue is painted onto the raw porcelain, then glazed and fired; it is under the glass and will never wear. The gold is applied afterward and fired again; it sits on the surface, so this plate is hand wash only. Two firings, two kinds of decoration, one plate.
Why this pattern. Petal-shaped panels of chrysanthemum brocade alternate with wave and diamond ground — a layout borrowed from Chinese Ming porcelain and made Japanese in Imari. The chrysanthemum is the flower of long life and of the Imperial house; the wave is the sea that carried these plates abroad.
How it is used in Japan. 6.3 inches is the classic torizara — the personal plate at a table where dishes are shared. Every household has a stack; the good ones come out at New Year.
On your table. A side plate, a dessert plate, the plate under a slice of tart or a few cookies. It makes a very plain thing look deliberate. Hand wash.

It feels both festive and fresh at the same time, and I think it will work with Japanese and Western food alike.

Very festive, and it goes well with Japanese food; whatever you put on it suddenly looks delicious. It brightens the table and feels special. The pattern on the rim is fine and beautiful and gives the whole design an elegance. Good for everyday, and for guests or a slightly special meal. One thing: there was a spot where the gold line was very slightly uneven, which was a small disappointment. Overall I am satisfied, but I took off one star for that.
