Pampas grass is what the Japanese put beside the moon-viewing dumplings: a stand-in for rice, a wish for the harvest. This one is made of washi paper, about 18 inches tall, with wire in the plume, stem and leaves so it can be bent into shape. It stands in a hinoki cypress box packed with rice straw, and comes out again every autumn.

Made by hand, so shape and color vary slightly.
