The reason behind this piece
Where it comes from. Fukui, in the district that has made Echizen lacquerware for some 1,500 years. This is a modern piece from that district: a resin base with a lacquer-style finish — light, stable, and made to be used every day rather than kept in a box.
How it is made. The base is molded, then coated and polished to the flat gold of a lacquered tray, with the rim picked out in silver and the back finished in black. The small opening on the underside is a drain from the coating process, not a flaw.
Why this shape. The hangetsu-bon, the half-moon tray, is the personal place setting of a Japanese meal: the flat edge faces the diner, the curve faces the table. Everything one person eats sits on it. It is how a kaiseki course arrives, and how a New Year breakfast is laid out at home.
How it is used in Japan. As a placemat that is also a tray — the bowl of rice, the soup, the small plates all arranged on it, then carried away in one movement.
On your table. A placemat with an edge, a serving tray for a cheese course or a set of small dishes, a tray for a drink and a plate on the sofa. Wipe clean; hand wash.
