The Object An unglazed Bizen ware tea bowl. The exterior features a striking two-tone contrast: the dark, ash-covered upper section and the deep reddish-brown clay body below. These colors are not painted but are the natural result of the wood-firing process. The artist's signature mark is incised on the base.
The Artist Izuru Yamamoto was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Okayama Prefecture. He is the son of Toshu Yamamoto, a designated Living National Treasure of Bizen ware. Izuru Yamamoto integrates traditional Bizen techniques with structural forms derived from his background in sculpture.
