Condition Please Note (Textural Detail): There is a distinct natural firing fissure (kiln flaw) on the "koshi" (hip/waist) area of the cup. While it does not affect the structural integrity or cause leakage, there is a tangible textural "catch" when holding it. In unglazed Bizen ware, such natural flaws are a characteristic result of the fierce wood-firing process. (Refer to the close-up image for details.)
The Object An unglazed Bizen ware teacup. The surface displays dramatic "Yohen" (natural kiln-mutation) effects. These complex textures and colors are entirely the result of the intense heat, wood ash, and placement within the wood-fired kiln. The artist's signature mark is incised on the base.
The Artist Izuru Yamamoto was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Okayama Prefecture. He is the son of Toshu Yamamoto, a designated Living National Treasure of Bizen ware. Izuru Yamamoto integrates traditional Bizen techniques with structural forms derived from his background in sculpture.
