Where it comes from. Hasami, a porcelain town in Nagasaki with over 400 years of kilns behind it. Its trade was always everyday tableware for ordinary homes, which is why Hasami porcelain is light, strong and quietly made.
How it is made. Thrown from porcelain and glazed a soft white. Before firing, a fine pink mist is sprayed over the glaze, so the colour sits in the surface rather than on it. The kiln melts the two together into a blush that is never quite even — heavier on one side, fading on the other.
Why this shape. The straight cylinder is the winter form of the tea bowl. The tall wall keeps the tea hot and hides its surface, so the drinker is not distracted. The sides are thinned, so it is lighter than a bowl this size has any right to be.
How it is used in Japan. A daily matcha bowl, used and rinsed and set back on the shelf. Pink and white is the palette of the very end of winter, when the first plum blossom opens over snow. The wooden box is how a tea bowl is kept and given.
On your table. Matcha, a dessert bowl, a bowl for yogurt and fruit in the morning. A gentle gift for a birthday or a new home. Hand wash; no microwave.
