The kaioke is the tall lidded bucket that held the 360 painted clam shells of kai-awase, the shell-matching game played in Japanese noble houses. Because each clam matches only its own half, a pair of these buckets became the first thing packed in a bride's trousseau. This one is Japanese cedar, 3.7 inches tall, with chrysanthemums built up on all four sides and the lid in gofun relief, tied with an orange cord. Made by a certified traditional craftsman.

It opens. Keep the clam box in it, or nothing at all. On a console with the letter box and the gozen stand it is the whole Chrysanthemum Festival, and it comes out every autumn. Wood darkens gently with age; every piece has its own grain.
