A clam shell, lined and raised with white chrysanthemums in gofun, the ground-oyster-shell pigment that Japanese craftsmen have built up in relief for centuries. The two halves close on an orange silk cord. It is a kōgō, an incense box, but nobody will mind if you keep a ring in it.
The clam is the Japanese symbol of a good marriage: only the two original halves fit together. The chrysanthemum is the flower of long life, and of September 9, the Chrysanthemum Festival, when Japan sets out its most refined objects for autumn. Made by a certified traditional craftsman; each shell is natural, so size and shape vary.
