Where it comes from. Hasami, a valley town in Nagasaki that has fired porcelain for over 400 years. Hasami made bowls for ordinary homes rather than for lords, and that is why its work is strong, light and easy to live with.
How it is made. Thrown from porcelain and painted by hand with Mt. Fuji rising behind a drift of cherry blossom. The brushwork is done one bowl at a time, so each mountain and each cloud of petals is slightly its own.
Why this shape. This is a hantsutsu, a half-cylinder: lower than the winter cylinder, with a wider mouth. It is the bowl of the in-between seasons — still deep enough to keep the tea warm, open enough to whisk easily and to see the froth as it forms.
Why Fuji and blossom. Fuji is the most auspicious image in Japan; seeing it in a New Year dream is said to bring a good year. Cherry blossom is spring itself. The two together are a wish for a fine start and a good season ahead.
How it is used in Japan. A tea bowl for the turn of the year into spring. The wooden box is how it is kept and how it is given.
