Where it comes from. Hasami, Nagasaki, where porcelain has been fired for over 400 years. Hasami never had a court to please; it made bowls for everyday kitchens, and its porcelain is still light, strong and unfussy for that reason.
How it is made. Thrown from porcelain, then glazed in layers — black over a warm brown — and fired so that the glaze is allowed to run. The maker decides how much; the kiln decides where. The drips and the places where the brown shows through are the record of that firing, different on every bowl.
Why this shape. The straight cylinder is the winter tea bowl. Its tall wall holds heat and hides the surface of the tea, so it stays hot and the drinker's eye is not pulled to it. The wall is thinned so the bowl sits light in two hands.
How it is used in Japan. A working bowl for daily matcha, not an ornament: whisked, drunk from, rinsed, shelved. It comes in a wooden box because that is how a tea bowl is stored and given.
On your table. Matcha, and just as well miso soup, a single bowl of rice with toppings, or a café-au-lait. The dark glaze makes green tea and white rice look their best. Hand wash; no microwave.
