This matcha bowl, beautifully finished with glaze, is known as an “Ao Chawan” or blue tea bowl. The gradation of the glaze darkens toward the center, creating a striking three-dimensional effect that enhances the atmosphere of your tea ceremony.
The sides are thoughtfully shaped to fit comfortably in the hand, making it very easy to hold. It is also remarkably lightweight compared to other matcha bowls — a rare feature that contributes to its popularity.
Handcrafted from porcelain in Hasami, Nagasaki, its cylindrical shape is ideal for use from winter to spring, with excellent heat retention to keep matcha warm during colder months.

The reason behind this piece
Where it comes from. Hasami, a valley town in Nagasaki that has been firing porcelain for over 400 years. Hasami never had a court or a castle to please; it made bowls for ordinary kitchens, which is why its work is strong, light and unfussy.
How it is made. Thrown from porcelain and dipped in a cobalt glaze that pools darker toward the well of the bowl. Each one comes out a little different — the gradation is decided by gravity and the kiln, not by a brush.
Why this shape. A straight-sided cylinder is the winter form of the tea bowl. The tall wall holds heat and hides the surface of the tea, so it stays hot and the drinker is not distracted. The sides are thinned so the bowl is lighter than it looks; a heavy bowl tires the hand before the tea is finished.
How it is used in Japan. A working bowl for daily matcha, not a museum object: whisked, drunk from, rinsed and set on a shelf. It comes in a wooden box because that is how a tea bowl is stored and given in Japan.
On your table. Matcha, obviously — but also a miso soup bowl, a bowl for a single serving of rice and toppings, or a café-au-lait bowl on a cold morning. Hand wash; no microwave.
