A hand-thrown Kyoto tea bowl painted with cranes flying among pine trees, and a small green turtle perched on the rim — tsuru and kame, Japan's classic pair of long-life symbols, for New Year's matcha or a celebration dessert. Blue waves ripple inside the bowl and soft gold clouds drift across the outside.

Each bowl is shaped on the wheel and painted by hand in a small family studio in Kyoto, so no two are exactly alike. The warm cream clay body feels light and pleasant in the hand, and at 12 cm across it also serves as a small bowl for sweets, fruit or a festive side dish.

Made in very small numbers. Hand wash only.
