Where it comes from. Made for YUWEN in Hasami, in the manner of Ko-Imari — the export porcelain that left the port of Imari in the 1600s and 1700s and ended up in the palaces of Europe.
How it is made. The technique is called kinran-de, “gold brocade hand”: the pattern is built up in overglaze red and colored enamels, fired, and then gold is applied over the top and fired again at a lower temperature. The gold sits on the surface, which is why it is hand-wash only and why it catches candlelight the way it does.
Why this pattern. The panels carry the flowers of the four seasons, with auspicious motifs between them. In Japan a plate like this says “all year, all good things” without a word.
How it is used in Japan. Brought out for New Year, for a guest, for a birthday. At 8.3 inches it is a torizara for a feast: each person's plate at a shared table, holding a little of everything.
On your table. A dinner plate for one, a cheese or dessert plate for the table, the plate you put a birthday cake slice on. Gold on porcelain wants a dark tablecloth and low light. Gift boxed; hand wash.
